From our clown rounds in Columbus
In the morning dr. tiny and I approached one of the hospital rooms. Inside the room were an eight-year-old girl and her mother. Seeing us, the girl called out. She said, "Hey, are you clowns"? We, of course, said, "yes." The girl was surprised to see us, and she asked if we were "really clowns." She wanted proof, some kind of clown proof.
dr. tiny demonstrated that his nose squeaked. Of course, that means we are clowns. The girl looked at us in amazement, not knowing how this was happening. She asked for proof that we were clowns, and we provided it. She was amused that we were able to prove that we are clowns.
Then, the girl saw me holding my ukulele, so she said she wanted to hear a song. We were eager to please her. I played a musical riff as I prepared to sing. The music was the opening bars of a Ray Charles song. However, just before I started to sing, the girl's mother beat me to the punch. Mom started to sing to the music I was playing. She created her own lyrics, singing, "Give me my papers, I wanna go home. Give me my papers. I wanna go home. Give me my papers. I wanna go home right now. "They had been in the hospital for a long time, and they were eager to be discharged by the staff.
dr. tiny was waving a bubble wand in the air as I played the music. The bubbles filled the room as the music played and as mom sang. We followed mom's example and began to sing along with her, "Give me my papers. I wanna go home. Give me my papers. I wanna go home… Give me my papers. I wanna go home right now. "Mom started to dance in her chair. She sang a few more improvised verses. Then she paused and looked up. The bubbles floated by her face as she said, "You clowns are here for me just as much as you are here for my daughter."
dr. tiny, and I agreed. We kept singing Mom's song as we left the room. "Give me my papers ….
Later that afternoon, we noticed that the mother and daughter were not in the room. I was grateful that we were there to be clowns for them. I imagined Mom and daughter singing a revised version of her song as they left the hospital, "WE GOT our papers. WE ARE going home…."
